Transformation of a mid-century classic

This renovation and expansion of a Techbuilt house, a kit system originally created by architect Carl Koch in the 1950s, maintains the original proportion and roof line while expanding the living area and transforming the lower level into a more fluid, light-filled space.

The owners’ commitment to preserving the original aesthetic while maximizing energy efficiency drove the design process. A new high-performance envelope, triple glazed windows, and radiant concrete floors integrate with the original cedar shakes and interior cedar cladding, both of which were removed and reinstalled or matched. Tilt-and-turn windows that mimic the original shapes enhance the passive thermal control opportunities while maximizing views and connection with the landscape. Collaborative curiosity and commitment to a high standard of design made for a fun and engaging process that resulted in a singular home.
